Shriek: An Afterword (2006) by Jeff VanderMeer

斷斷續續地看了近兩個月，終於把 VanderMeer 這本 Ambergris 的新作看完了。這本書的步調本來就是緩慢而帶有強烈私密色彩，儘管文字與鋪陳比起 The City of Saints & Madmen 來得可親許多，閱讀時卻不免時時掩卷，試圖想要以自己的感覺來重塑書中人的種種感受。

表面上，這是接續 "The Hoegbotton Guide to the Early History of Ambergris" （The City of Saints & Madmen 的第二篇）的後記，亦即書名後半「An Afterword」的緣由。然而，Shriek 本身也是一部歷史：它記載了一個人、一個家庭、一群文化圈份子、一座城市及其周邊區域，還有一些不為人知，或是人不欲知的祕辛。

在緩慢的閱讀過程中，全書從開始到中段只有「悶」一字可以形容，許多訊息和人物在腦中心中不停翻攪，卻理不出一個頭緒。敘事者 Janice Shriek 本來就不是個討人喜愛的角色，從她的筆下（以及 Duncan Shriek 不時出現的眉批），我們可以知道幾個事件，認識幾個人物，不過很難去理解他們之間的恩怨情仇，以及同當代 Ambergris 歷史的關連。一直到戰爭那年的淡水烏賊節......所有潛伏在腦袋與胸口的炸藥一次完全炸開，個人私史和公眾歷史搭上了線，歷史學家本身就在創造歷史、成就歷史。主人公 Duncan Shriek 此語點出全書的一切：

Should the historian's personal life happen to coincide in some way with the history he has chosen to write about -- if the personal history 'doubles' the public history -- then an alchemy occurs whereby the historian, in a sense, becomes the history. That is, once rendered in all the signs and symbols at the historian's command, the history he has written becomes, for him, the story of his own life. This fact may not be obvious to the reader except in flashes and flickers of reflected thought, where the passion of the historian for the story peers out, naked, from the page. There, for a flicker of a moment, we find the historian exposed, if only the world decides to correctly interpret the clues.

也正因如此，歷史是被創造，而獲得大眾相信才能成立的。儘管故事世界裡的人相信 Mary Sabon， VanderMeer 的讀者幾乎會支持 Duncan Shriek 的立場與見解。因為我們讀的就是他自身的歷史。

閱讀本書的感受和 The City of Saints & Madmen 截然不同。在卸下萬花筒般的創作形式之後，Shriek 所激發的，是對 Ambergris 這座城市的人事物種種，更個人化的詮釋與體驗。只是這個過程和結果太過於私密，往往不足為外人道。
