有的小說就像玫瑰紅一樣，初嚐時甜甜的很入口，喝多了後勁卻強到令人有些無法招架。匈牙利裔女作家 Theodora Goss 的文字就有這種特質，一沾上就停不了，故事讀完後，整個人卻變得黯然銷魂。除了她的文字特性，Goss 更擅於透過不同角度側寫同一事件的種種面向，或是在直線敘述中攙雜許多分支和斷點，彷彿繪畫中的留白手法，強迫讀者自行拼湊那刻意闕漏的幾塊拼圖，在閱讀中達成創作的圓滿。有時很簡單的故事也因此有了多重的層次空間。
編輯選篇眼光真好，開卷的 "The Rose in Twelve Petals"、"Professor Berkowitz Stands on the Threshold" 就完全表現出這些特質。Goss 少時顛沛流離的背景也反映在部分的篇章之中，"Letters from Budapest" 為其代表。她偶爾也平鋪直述，只是我認為這樣的作品相對就顯得比較薄弱（除了 "Conrad"）。像入圍 2005 年世界奇幻獎最佳短篇的 "The Wings of Meister Wilhelm" 就不如相同背景的封卷作 "Lessons with Miss Gray"。
其他我讀起來比較有感覺的是 "Lily, with Clouds"、"Miss Emily Gray"、"Sleeping with Bears"、"Death Comes for Ervina"。許多評論家頗為讚賞的 "In the Forest of Forgetting" 和 "The Belt"，對我而言過於幽遠，必須再細細精讀才能體會。
