資料顯示這是 Wilson 第一部嘗試挑戰「巨大議題」的小說，雖然入圍雨果獎，但就我看來還是無法克盡其功。故事一開始還滿吸引人的：1912 年一場異變把歐洲整個抹成全新的「外星」生態系，原有文明全滅，北美居民和原歐洲強權的殖民地人士躍躍欲試，準備開拓「新」疆土。類似的題材後來的 Kim Stanley Robinson 的 The Years of Rice and Salt 也處理過（雖然不算成功，但那是文化隔閡問題，可說非戰之罪），而一戰前的世界情勢原可以讓這場爭奪更有看頭。可惜故事並非如此發展。
Wilson 一下子把整個格局拉到多元宇宙的永恆鬥爭，雖然構思頗有新意，但把主角一次次拉進毫無頭緒的戰鬥裡只會讓讀者一頭霧水，對我而言，比 Fritz Leiber 的 The Big Time 還要更慘。Wilson 大可以把後來的設定另外寫成獨立故事，不必硬要插在這裡。
至於「人」的細膩描寫，在本書中只能算差強人意，要到下一本的 The Chronoliths 才完全發揮。
